Service was outstanding from the very beginning. You can choose from a regular bike or electric bike. He will come to you or you can go to him. If he delivers to your hotel it is slightly more expensive. The nice thing is that with these bikes you can set your own agenda and create your own tour versus going on a pre-set tour. It does help, however, to have a phone with GPS available as then you can set a bike route and go from there. Alvaro put his number in my phone in case anything happened along our route and we needed to meet him.
At the end of our time, he met us at our hotel and picked up the bikes. Price includes bikes, helmets, and locks.

I climbed the tower for a view, but that may not have been the smartest thing to do.. We took an old train from Trinidad through the valley, stopped on plantage, mounted a tower. Nice train ride, but it was raining and rain was coming in the train from the sides Check weather before going. We visited the Valle with our guide Elizabeth who knows all details from slavery, sugar mills but can also explain on Cuban habits etc.
I think one cannot visit this place without a guide, so contact Elizabeth. This area has a very interesting history, but unfortunately the commercialisation and hordes of vendors reduce it to just another tourist trap. Walk out the back of the hotel to see the old press used in a bygone era. The climb to the top of the tower affords one a nice view, but it can get very crowded and quite dangerous in my opinion.
It is all about a run-down sugar plantation. It must have been amazing when it was in full operation and they are doing a great deal of work to try and restore it and you have to give them credit for it. However the site is damaged and hurricanes do not help operations either. I love the fact that they are doing their best to recuperate their history and sites but had I known beforehand what I was going to visit I would have probably reconsidered my options.
